She stalks the island Madeira in search for her male and female victims whom she kills while having sexual intercourse with them. The writer Baron Von Rathony (Jack Taylor), who suspects her true nature, is so fascinated by her charms and supernatural aura that he falls in love with her...

Highly enjoyable modern day vampire action-spectacle. Blade (Wesley Snipes) is a "day walker": half vampire, half human, combining the advantages of both. Together with his human associate Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), the two form a team of vampire slayers. They use the M.D. Karen Jenson (N'Bushe Wright), who was bitten by a vampire, as a bait trying to get to the megalomaniac vampire Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), who has big plans...

Blonde Heaven (1995):

Stupid softcore pornographic movie that takes a vampire storyline as a pretense to show its boring sex scenes. Illyana (Julie Strain) is the leader of a coven of vampires in Los Angeles that disguises itself as a modeling/escort agency known as "Blonde Heaven". She takes a liking to the newcomer Angie (Raelyn Saalman) and tries to seduce her, while Angie's boyfriend Kyle (Alton Butler) does his best to protect her.

Bordello of Blood (1996):

Hilarious vampire trash movie produced in the "Tales from the Crypt" series. When the "mother of all vampires" Lilith (Angie Everhart) is reanimated by reinserting the heart into her corpse, she opens a brothel in modern-day America where the customers have to pay more than just money. When the brother of Katherine Verdoux (Erika Eleniak) vanishes, she hires the sleazy P.I. Rafe Guttman (Dennis Miller) to find him. Guttman traces his steps to Lilith's whore-house... The movie has a showdown that is somewhat reminiscent of "From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)", although it's not nearly as spectacular.

Remarkable new movie version of this literary all-time-classic, telling it rather as a love than a horror story, in the spirit of "House of Dark Shadows (1970)". Dracula (Gary Oldman) believes Mina Murray (Winona Ryder) to be the reincarnation of his lost wife Elisabeta and tries reclaim her love. Especially interesting is the reference to the historical Dracula and his role in the war against the Turks. Best of all, nevertheless, is probably the very unusual characterization of Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) as a fanatic vampire hunter who shows how close genius can be to madness.

Rather mediocre sequel in Hammer's Dracula Movie Series. While being on her way to a new position in Transylvania, the young teacher Marianne Danielle (Yvonne Monlaur) helps Baron Meinster (David Peel) escape from the prison he was put in by his mother, Baroness Meinster (Martita Hunt). In doing so, she has unwittingly liberated an evil vampire, who then stalks the landscape. Luckily, the local priest has the presence of mind to call the vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) for help...

This movie presents a very innovative and interesting approach to the vampire theme. The aging antique dealer Jesús Gris (Federico Luppi) gets into the possession of a small golden device that seems to be a musical clock. But as he winds it up, it suddenly produces a spike that painfully stabs into his hand. After this event, Gris starts feeling younger and stronger, while developing a distinct appetite for blood...

Dance of the Vampires [aka: "The Fearless Vampire Killers"] (1967):

Together with his clumsy assistant Alfred (Roman Polanski) the always absent-minded vampire hunter Professor Abronsius (Jack MacGowran) is on his mission to extinguish vampires in the Carpathian mountains, where he discovers the sinister Count Von Krolock (Ferdy Mayne).

She meets the mysterious glass-blower Anton (Anthony Perkins), who claims to have known her father. Nevertheless, there is much more to Anton than Katherine suspects... The only innovative idea of this movie is that the vampires, rather than bite their victims with fangs, suck the blood using their tongues.

Not very innovative but visually appealing softcore erotic vampire thriller set in modern-day Los Angeles. Same old story: The vampire Christian (Robert Knepper) finds the reincarnation of his lost wife in the nurse Katherine (Kathleen Kinmont). The police detective Woods (John Enos) gets involved while investigating a series of missing person cases.

Deep Rising (1998):

Stupid but fun-to-watch trash movie about a giant octopus-like monster that sucks its victims dry of all body fluids. Captain Treat Williams (John Finnegan) is hired to take a group of hijackers to the Argonautica, the most expensive and exclusive luxury cruise liner of the world. As they reach the ship, they find it completely empty. During their search, they come upon a handful of the crew and passengers, among them the charming jewel thief Trillian St. James (Famke Janssen). The few survivors tell a frightening tale about a terrible something lurking around on the ship and killing everybody...

Rather boring comedy, which most of the time tries to be a persiflage of the movie "Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)". The movie more or less follows the storyline of the novel, presenting Dracula (Leslie Nielsen) and his antagonist, Dr. Abraham Van Helsing (Mel Brooks), as two clumsy idiots.

Worthwhile continuation of the classic Dracula storyline. In nowadays London, a group of thieves break into the antiques shop of Matthew Van Helsing (Christopher Plummer). Since it is heavily guarded, they expect to find valuable articles, but instead they release the locked up Count Dracula (Gerard Butler). Now Van Helsing and his assisstant Simon Sheppard (Jonny Lee Miller) have to travel to New Orleans to rescue Van Helsing's daughter Mary Heller (Justine Waddell) from the wrath of Dracula... The movie provides an interesting new interpretation of the vampire myth based on Christian tradition.

Silly and boring horror B-picture. The singer Judith Fontaine (Regina Carrol) is looking for her missing sister in a hippie beach community in California. It turns out that she was kidnapped by Groton (Lon Chaney Jr.), the maniac servant of Dr. Durea (J. Carrol Naish), who is running a house of horrors by the beach. Dr. Durea is really the last of the family of Frankenstein and uses Gorton to get him victims for his experiments. One night, he is visited by Count Dracula (Zandor Vorkov), who shows him the place where the original Frankenstein monster was buried...

This great movie is not really about vampires, but I added it to the list since it deals with the making of the notorious vampire movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space". The movie is a biographical work about the "worst director of all times" Edward D. Wood Jr. (Johnny Depp) and how he manages, with enormous enthusiasm, to make his movies against all oppositions. It also sheds light on the end of the career of the first important Dracula actor Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau) and shows some backgrounds about the famous Vampira (Lisa Marie).

The storyline is a cheap rip-off of "Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)", revolving around a vampire (Martin Kemp) who believes that the college student Charlotte (Alyssa Milano) is a reincarnation of his lost love. Her boyfriend Chris (Harrison Pruett) tries to save her.

Very nice vampire road movie. Sean (Kerr Smith), who is paid to drive a Mercedes sports car from L.A. to Miami, picks up the hitchhiker Nick (Brendan Fehr) on the route. As they run into the nearly dead Megan (Izabella Miko), Nick tells the startled Sean that Megan was the victim of vampires that he just happens to be hunting. Now the three of them are up against the arch vampire Kit (Jonathon Schaech) and his group of underlings...

Fright Night (1985):

Highly entertaining vampire comedy. The teenager Charlie Brewster (William Ragsdale) discovers that his neighbor Jerry Dandrige (Chris Sarandon) is a vampire. Since nobody else believes him, he turns to Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), the host of the late-night horror-show "Fright Night", where he appears in the role of a vampire hunter. Persuaded by Brewster's worried friends, Vincent decides to play along and do as though he'll perform a vampire test on Dandrige, just to convince Brewster that he was wrong. Little does he know that this time he's up against the real thing...

Very amusing fun-'n-gore vampire movie. On the run from the police, the notorious gangster brothers Seth (George Clooney) and Richard Gecko (Quentin Tarantino) kidnap the former preacher Jacob Fuller (Harvey Keitel) and his two kids as a means to cross the border to Mexico. Once there, they go to the "Titty Twister" a seedy all-night saloon where they plan to meet a contact. Too late, they realize that the bar is the hideout of a pack of vampires, so they have to practice some innovative self-defense, which culminates in an incredible splatter-orgy...

This is the beginning of Hammer's Dracula Movie Series. While it is based only rather loosely on the storyline of the novel, it is nevertheless a worthwhile adaptation of the book. With Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, it presents basically the archetypes of the sinister count and his brave adversary for all modern vampire movies. Pretending to be his new librarian, the vampire hunter Jonathan Harker (John Van Eyssen) tries to attack Count Dracula (Christopher Lee) in his castle, which is located close to a not exactly defined city somewhere in western Europe. Harker fails and Dracula, who has seen a photograph of his fiancee Lucy (Carol Marsh), decides to travel to Harker's home town to make Lucy his next victim. Meanwhile, Harker's colleague Doctor van Helsing (Peter Cushing) is determined to avenge the death of his friend and destroy Dracula...

House of Dark Shadows (1970):

[Based on the very popular gothic daily soap ABC TV series "Dark Shadows (1966-1971)", more or less following the beginning of the vampire storyline of the series, using the same actors.]
This movie is, as far as I know, the first motion picture to explore some interesting ideas (which were originally, of course, introduced in the TV series) that were later picked up by other films. In modern-day Maine, New England, stands Collinwood, the mansion of the Collins family. Unknown to them, their ancestor and vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) lies in a chained coffin in a secret room in the family mausoleum. After being freed, he pretends to be a long-lost cousin from England and moves into an abandoned old house on the estate. He believes that Maggie Evans (Kathryn Leigh Scott), the governess of the family's son, is the reincarnation of his lost love, Josette, and tries to reclaim her love. At the same time, the M.D. Dr. Julia Hoffman (Grayson Hall) falls in love with Barnabas. She discovers his identity and tries to devise a medical cure, being convinced that his vampiric nature is an illness that can be treated.

Nicely done but not very innovative television miniseries. Little does he know that the "midnight slasher" is the rich and powerful businessman Crispian Grimes (Greg Wise). Grimes, who is actually the lord of the vampires and uses a werewolf as his henchman for the dirty work, has sent an expedition to find Frankenstein's Creature (Peter Crombie)...

The script for this excellent movie was written by Anne Rice, who thus adapted herself, and it follows the storyline of the novel rather closely. In modern-day San Francisco, the vampire Louis Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt) tells the story of his unlife to a young reporter (Christian Slater). He begins the story at a time when he was still human, a plantation owner in the 18th century, who was seduced, bitten, and turned by the tempting Lestat de Lioncourt (Tom Cruise). Quite at unease with his existence as a vampire, Louis' search for a deeper meaning ultimately leads him to Europe.

Irma Vep (1996):

While this is not a vampire movie at all, I nevertheless decided to list it here, since it depicts the attempt to remake the classical silent movie "Vampires, Les (1915)" (which, in fact, is itself not a vampire movie at all, despite the name...). The director Rene Vidal (Jean-Pierre Léaud) is convinced that the Hong Kong action star Maggie Cheung (who plays herself) is the perfect cast for the role of Irma Vep (the name, by the way, is an anagram for "vampire"). The movie project turns out to be rather chaotic, and the star from Hong Kong seems to be the only professional on the whole set...

Stupid and boring movie that is supposed to be a comedy. In 1876, the countess Barbara von Weidenborn (Evelyne Kraft) is abducted from her young ladies' boarding school by count Dracula (Stephen Boyd). He bites and turns her, but is killed by the angry villagers directly afterwards. Barbara is interred in a coffin, but when she is accidentally exhumed hundred years later, in modern day Germany, she wakes up and starts killing people. After she falls in love with a police officer (Brad Harris) who investigates the deaths, she decides to be a nice little vampire that only gets her food from the blood bank...

Tolerable adaptation of Angela Sommer-Bodenburg's wonderful novel series, which moves the action from Germany to Scotland, and regrettably kills off the subtle magic of the books with a Hollywood-like storyline and flashy special effects. The all-American 9-year-old boy Tony Thompson (Jonathan Lipnicki) has a hard time making new friends when his father moves the family to a small village in Scotland. Finally, he finds a pal when he meets the friendly little vampire Rudolph Sackville-Bagg (Rollo Weeks). Tony helps Rudolph in his search for a magical amulet that could cure all vampires from their curse, while they are both hunted by the stupid vampire slayer Rookery (Jim Carter).

Very funny persiflage of the Dracula theme. Count Dracula (George Hamilton) is evicted from his Transylvanian domicile by the Communist government. Together with his faithful servant Renfield (Arte Johnson), Dracula goes to New York, searching for the model Cindy Sondheim (Susan Saint James), since he fell in love with her picture in a fashion magazine. Mixing the genres of horror and western, this excellent film is essentially a vampire road movie, set in the Southwest of contemporary USA. When the farm boy Caleb (Adrian Pasdar) falls for the beautiful Mae (Jenny Wright), he doesn't know that he is flirting with a vampire. Before he knows what is happening, Caleb has been bitten and turned, and is taken in by Mae's pack, which is led by the master vampire Jesse (Lance Henriksen). Travelling with this bunch of outlaws, Caleb has serious problems with the necessity to kill humans for their blood.

Being the very first adaptation of the famous "Dracula" novel, this expressionist silent masterpiece is still among the best vampire films that were ever made. The movie only loosely follows the storyline of the novel and, for copyright reasons, all of the names are changed and the location is shifted from London to the German city Bremen. A very interesting aspect that is introduced is that the presence of the sinister vampire, Count Orlock (Max Schreck), is accompanied by swarms of rats and the plague.

This is a very free, but nevertheless excellent, movie adaptation of Richard Matheson's masterpiece. Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) struggles to survive as seemingly the last sane human in a dying world gone mad. In 1975 (four years in the future at the time the movie was made), a war between Russia and China caused a terrible world-wide plague due to the use of biological weapons. Neville, who used to work as a medical doctor for the U.S. army, was able to take a newly-developed experimental vaccine, thus becoming immune to the plague. Everyone else either died or turned into psychotic, pale creatures with light-sensitive eyes. Matthias (Anthony Zerbe), a self-acclaimed prophet, has gathered a group of the survivors to form a religious sect called "The Family". They blame science and technology as being responsible for the tragedy, and Neville, the last user of technology, has become a symbol for science to them, the last remains of an old world that has to be cleansed... While the vampire aspect of the novel was completely abandoned, this adaptation still is true to the spirit of the book.

To achieve this goal, he hires a real vampire (Willem Dafoe) to play the leading part of Count Orlock. Trying not to scare his crew, he doesn't tell them about the true nature of this peculiar "actor", whom he introduces as one Max Schreck...

This very entertaining erotic vampire movie is the third and last in Hammer's Karnstein Movie Trilogy. Set in nineteenth century middle-Europe, the plot is focussed on the twins Maria (Mary Collinson) and Frieda Gellhorn (Madeleine Collinson), who go to live with their uncle Gustav Weil (Peter Cushing). Weil is the leader of a religious sect that hunts people suspected of witchcraft, with the success of largely killing innocent victims, but unable to deal with the real threat, the vampire Count Karnstein (Damien Thomas). While the shy Maria is intimidated by the whole situation, her reckless sister Frieda is irresistably drawn to the mysterious Count.

This rather erotic film, which is the first in Hammer's Karnstein Movie Trilogy, is one of the closest movie adaptations of the classic "Carmilla" story. In 19th century Styria, the beautiful young aristocrat Laura (Pippa Steel) is seduced by a mysterious lady, a guest in the house who is actually the vampire Carmilla Karnstein (Ingrid Pitt). While Laura's health declines, a friend of the family arrives, the grief-stricken General von Spielsdorf (Peter Cushing), who has just lost his daughter due to Carmilla.

She gets some help in her quest from Adam Van Helsing (Richard Joseph Paul), the leader of a high-tech team of vampire slayers.

While Grlscz is already the chief suspect of police inspector Healey (Timothy Spall), who investigates the mysterious deaths of Grlscz' two former girlfriends, he has a new prospective victim, the lovely engineer Anna Levels (Elina Löwensohn).
